Burlington Bertie - 90x60cm oil on canvas POA
These lyrics were in my head the entire time I was painting Daaaaarling Bertie, so it feels only right they stay with him now!
I'm Burlington Bertie, I rise at ten thirty
And saunter along like a toff
I walk down the Strand with my gloves on my hand
Then I walk down again with them off
I'm all airs and graces, correct easy paces
Without food so long I've forgot where my face is
I'm Bert, Bert, I haven't a shirt
But my people are well off you know.
Nearly everyone knows me from Smith to Lord Rosebr'y,
This painting is of THE most beautiful hound - sitting upright against a stark, light-colored background. The style is realistic but also expressive, emphasizing the dog’s elongated limbs, lean musculature, and slightly exaggerated posture. The dog’s large, soulful eyes and raised head give it a sense of nobility or curiosity, perhaps even a touch of whimsical pride.
I’ve kept to a muted palette: Primarily soft greys, pinks, and browns, lending the image a delicate, contemplative tone.
Clean composition: The plain background ensures all attention is focused on Bertie, with shadows beneath grounding him in the space.
Elegant pose: His head is poised, statuesque even and his stance suggests dignity, character, and personality—attributes that might reflect the inspiration behind the name “Burlington Bertie,” which evokes a classic, dapper English character from music hall tradition.
